PowerMatt Presentation
...Ever do a 20-minute presentation to your Boss, Administrator, and Board of Directors, without using Powerpoint, and get roundly applauded by everyone present? No?
I must be cooler than you then. :-P

Never doubted it. (I would have applauded you just for not using Powerpoint, however.)

I couldn't do anything for 20 minutes so well done, sire. :)

But what did you use for visual representations?

Large sweeping hand gestures and photocopied web pages, highlighted in the relevant places with marker.
FYI, the report was on 'Current practices, statutory requirements and comparitive costs regarding inspection and certification of hoists and lifting equipment in the theatre industry', so the introduction alone took about 10 minutes. :-)

But how will everyone who attended the meeting tell everyone else they meet about what they were told?? Will they have to repeat large sweeping hand gestures???
(visions of random people in DL making large 'Matt-like' sweeping hand gestures while discussing hoists and lifting equipment)

They can use regular words, if they so desire. Sweeping hand gestures optional.
Or they can contact me. :-)
(besides, everyone who attended the meeting was everyone who needed to know, really)

That reminds me of my college days. Back then, only rich kids had really good computers with nice printers that made their papers look as if they had been typeset. I had a crummy little Commodore 64 with a dot-matrix heat transfer printer. And I got better grades, only because I spent more time on the writing and researching, where most of the rich kids just thought they needed neat-looking papers. Content counts.

It's all about the content!
Everything's all about the content really though, isn't it? I mean, I spent ages trying to make my blog 'look cool', and then I realised that people only come back and read it if I write something interesting.

You lost me after "without using powerpoint" don't understand.

That's probably because you've been using Powerpoint too long to be able to do a presentation without it.
(note: You are admitting, of course, that I am cooler than you)

It's harder to do a good presentation WITH powerpoint than without.

I disagree, and nothing you can say will change my mind. Powerpoint is a tool (and an overused one at that), you can do the same job with different tools. You can hammer a nail in with a rock, or the back of an axe. Different method, same result.
I have yet to see any Powerpoint show that doesn't illicit a response from me other than 'Oh, Powerpoint... Zzzzzzz...'.

Exactly. You just made my point. Which is why it's harder to do a good presentation with powerpoint.
Posted by: Adrian | July 3, 2006 5:45 PM
So: Why use it? If it's so freaking hard to do a good presentation with it, why not use a flipchart and a pen? Or words and gestures (and photocopied handouts, of course)? Why use another Microsoft product to do your job for you, when the very act of using it makes your job harder?
