Gmail Google Mail?

Hmmm. When I opened my Gmail this morning I got an interesting surprise. Gmail isn't Gmail anymore (it's still beta though?), it's now Google Mail. What's all that about? Wasn't it Google Mail to begin with, a couple of years ago? And then it was Gmail. And now it's Google Mail again.
I do wish those Googlers would ever make up their mind.

Because of copyright issues they had to call it Google Mail in the UK. They may just have spotted that you are not in the US, and decided to lump their Irish users with the UK brand.

It get curiouser though...
When I sign on from home (ISP is NTL), it's Google Mail. When I sign on in work (ISP Eircom), it's still Gmail.
Maybe because NTL is a UK company? What's the copyright issue anyway...?

Someone else owned the copyright to "Gmail" in the UK. TheRegister.co.uk has details:

I forgot the add that NTL connect their broadband users through Newcastle, so you appear to be in the UK. I am not sure where a BT Ireland user will appear though, UK or Ireland?

Yeah it's based on the peering point and the IP block. DNS probably flags all of NTL as UK.

Hey, if you're allowed to post stuff about Shakira's lyrics, I'm allowed to post geeky stuff. That's why there's a 'geek' category, see?

And it is written biblically that the geek shall inherit the earth.

The Bible is my all-time favourite fantasy book. It's way more 'out there' than the Lord of the Rings, even.
