Review: "Tenacious D: The Pick of Destiny"
Following on from my review of the soundtrack comes the (some might say inevitable) review of the actual movie itself."The greatest motion picture of all time"
- Jack Black
- Kyle Gass
- Ronnie James Dio
- Meat Loaf
- Tim Robbins
- Ben Stiller
Plot: JB grows up in a religious family with a God-fearing Dad, who thinks Rock n' Roll is the work of the Dark Lord Satan himself. Jables doesn't agree with this, and after a divine visitation from Ronnie James Dio goes on a journey to find his inner Rock God, and a tight compadre with whom he will form the "World's Most Awesome Band". JB journeys to Hollywood, and meets KG. They form a strong alliance, but when they realise they may not have the awesome talents they require to Rock the world, they become disheartened, and seek inspiration. When they are told by a mysterious music shop owner of the legendary Pick Of Destiny (or POD for short), they know in their hearts they must seek out this instrument of Rock grandeur.
That sums up the plot, in a nutshell, but to say that's what actually happens would be like saying my ass was a watermelon. There's so many weird, strange, insane and occasionally vomit-inducing twists and turns that at the end of the movie you feel (well, I did, and so did Andy) that you've been there for hours, but it's only been 93 minutes. From the rock simulator to the first gig to the dream to "the divide" to the Final Battle, by way of a surreal psilocybin-induced trip sequence, it all goes a bit weird pretty much from the first bar of the first song, about three seconds into the movie, and doesn't stop pelting along until it ends with a huge bong hit at the end.
Verdict: So what's it like? Well, if you're a fan of The D, it's an incredible journey that encompasses every aspect of the creation and rise of the Greatest Band On Earth, and gets a definite A+++++.
If you're not a fan of The D, well, I dunno, as I fall squarely into the "fan of The D" bracket. It's probably somewhere between Jay & Silent Bob Strike Back, and Spinal Tap, but with a Sasquach. That do anything for ya?
