Nikki's New Itty-Bitty Lappy-Toppy

Yesterday, for no particular reason (birthday, Christmas, etc.), I decided to buy Nikki an Advent 4211 Netbook from PC World in Carrickmines Retail Park. It's very, very itty-bitty and cute, but it's not a lightweight at all. It's got Windows XP (which isn't actually a bad thing at all), an Intel Atom 1.6Ghz processor, a gig of RAM, and an 80GB hard drive, webcam, loads of USB ports, and a 10 (TEN!) inch screen. The only thing it lacks is an actual optical disc drive of any sort.

It's also Nikki's very first laptop, if you don't count ones that she "had", for "work", that actually belonged to "the company".

Apparently I'm the "best fiancée ever", or something.

(it's the one on the right in the photo, the other one is my 15.4" Macbook Pro)

Things I Learned In France

  • Driving on the right in a right-hand drive car isn't actually that hard.
  • Irish drivers are FUCKING BRUTAL, even when they're not driving in Ireland.
  • In France, you can't be busted for speeding by a stationary camera unless there's a sign immediately before it saying that the camera is there and what speed you should be going. So, to get busted for speeding, you have to be very, VERY stupid.
  • Tuesday is the day when the Police Nationale cover the countryside with mobile speed-traps. Driving at or under the speed limit is generally a very good idea.
  • In your car, you must have: A spare set of bulbs/fuses, a warning triangle, a hi-viz jacket, a spare tyre, and your tires must be the correct thread depth. The penalty for not having all of these is death.
  • It's the law in the French countryside that if you are walking down the road, you must be carrying a baguette.
  • It's also French law that there must be two bakeries in every village, so you can get croissants on a Sunday or Monday morning even if one of them is closed.
  • The wine is approximately as cheap, per litre, as petrol, but tastes a lot better.
  • The cheese! Like, OMG.
  • Did I mention the wine?
  • And the CHEESE. Oh, the cheese...
  • A lot of people died on D-Day, and the French (at least the ones in Normandy) are very grateful.
  • To say the lifestyle is laid-back (in the countryside of Normandy) is a ridiculous understatement.

Dropbox

Dropbox is brilliant. I can't remember whether I signed up by asking for an invite or if someone I randomly know via the interpipes, but I received an invite in my mail the other day, and had a look at what the craic was.

It's basically a folder, right, that exists on every computer you use. You download the software (Mac/PC) and it sets up a folder on your machine of choice. On the Mac, it sets up it's very own spot in your "Places" in Finders' sidebar, like this:

Dropbox

(on Windows, it sets up a folder in 'My Documents>Dropbox')

The folders inside your Dropbox look like this:

Cankles

In relation to Babs' post from earlier today, here's a photo of her offending cankles:

Cankles

This is what happens when you don't

  1. Take some aspirin

  2. Drink plenty of water

  3. wear flight socks

  4. stroll around every so often

When you're on a long-haul flight.

I'd say lesson learned.

The Rest Of Australia!!

So I left Mission Beach sorely disappointed at my cancelled Skydive but onto bigger and better things!

I went to Magnetic Island, nice place, nice weather, nice kayaking, it was fun, met some cool peeps, was sort of bored and then left again to go to Airlie Beach to go on a Whitsunday Islands Sailing adventure. My boat was called the New Horizon. We drank lots of beers, did lots of saling, scuba diving, snorkelling, shark watching (only lil reef sharks though so it was ok, there were no Jaws like attacks. My bed was beside the engine room, I got very little sleep. I did see Whitehaven Beach, it is like paradise!! Then we got back to Airlie and I had a 12 hour wait ahead of me to get my night time Greyhound bus. I chilled out at the lagoon, walked about aimlessly, talked to a crazy Italian coffee shop owner and then went to the pub for our boats party. Got fairly tipsy and then swayed my way down the main street with my backpack to get on the horrible
Greyhound. I had a 12 hour journey overnight. I awoke at 6am from my beer fuelled slumber and thanked my lucky stars that we were stopping in the next 10 minutes. I downed abut a litre of orange juice in about 10 seconds such was the ferocity of my hangover.

Next stop was the Town Of 1770, so called because it was discovered in 1770. Sweet! I loved it there. Very chilled out, small town, I surfed loads (and pretty well) won the best bikini contest in my surf school for my floral number and then went on a 4 hour motorbike cruise called the Scooteroo, we ate chips and dips while watching the sun set over the ocean (that doesn’t happen much on the East Coast seeing as the sun sets over the West) and it was all very pretty.

Productivity

I've had a productive day today. Apart from getting in at 8am (which rerely, if ever, happens) completely clearing my work email of anything that has to be acted upon (barring those things that are required to be acted upon soon), getting a dance show in and set up (just finished a few tweaks now), getting orders in for major structural components (acoustic doors and the like), I've also found the time to print out this sign, and stick it on my office door:
