Pop Will Scare Your Granny

Inspired by Dragon's Tweet from earlier today, here's Pop Will Eat Itself on The Late Late show in 1995.

The band had initally been told they would be performing live, but during rehearsals were informed they would have to lip-synch the track instead. So the wrapped sellotape around their faces, simulated having sex with each other, and trashed their instruments half-way through the song, even as the track continued playing. Worth watching for the shot of the audience (before the band started playing) at about 1m 25s in, and for the end where there is absolutely no reaction, positive or negative, from the blue rinse brigade which the audience was almost entirely comprised of.

Weird Fishes by Tobias Stretch

One of the winners of the Aniboom Animation Contest For Radiohead's In Rainbows. I'm filing it under the "weird, but good" category. I don't like it as much as the House Of Cards one that was made with lasers, but it's definitely on a par with the one for Reckoner by Clement Picon, a previous winner in the same contest..

I'm really looking forward to the next videos in this contest/series, for 15 Step and Videotape, due to hit later today and on Friday, here.

Feel Good Music

Every time I hear this it transports me back to Perth, sitting on the "gossiping seat" with my friend Laura drinking El Cheapo Beer and a bit of a chair dance (mainly pretending we were drumming), gossiping about everything, telling each other our life stories and laughing a lot.

Whats the time Mr Wolf - South of Bombay

Today, the cold, wet, windy and basically miserable day that it was, I really fucking wished I was there, just even for ten minutes, but alas it was not to be. I am going to Manchester at the end of this month to see her and I can't wait, roll on the 27th. Whoop whoop! (PS: I really hope this embedded because as you all probably know, I am pretty much retarded at anything computery!)

Seven Songs

Tom has tagged me with this really interesting meme.

“List seven songs you’re into right now. No matter what the genre, whether they have words, or even if they’re not any good, but they must be songs you’re really enjoying now, shaping your spring.”

Interesting. Mostly because I don't listen to "songs" or "tunes", as such. I mostly have my iPod on in the car, playing everything I have on it on shuffle, or I play an album (any album) from start to finish, and then play another one. I listen to music in a fairly random pattern, so it doesn't really "shape" anything, apart from my eardrums. So, here's seven songs (or tunes) that I've randomly listened to recently, and I like.

"The Lark" by Moving Hearts. This is an epic tune. It's actually a set of dance tunes (as in "Irish" dance), linked together in amazing ways. It starts off slowly, and moved quite rapidly into ass-kicking, jumping about territory. One of my favourite tunes ever, if not my favourite. I couldn't find a YouTube video, probably because it's 13 minutes long. There's plenty of other Moving Hearts stuff there though.

"Group Four" by Massive Attack. Again, epic. Starts off crunchy, goes smooth, and then gets very crunchy again. Not something you can dance to though. Ideally listened to by yourself, at full volume, in a darkened room.

"Inner Universe" by Origa. This is the opening theme from Ghost In The Shell: Standalone Complex, and it's amazing. I have no idea what the Japanese chick is singing about, but it's cool. Gets really thumping at several stages too.

"Tell Me" by the Stone Roses. This was the 'Roses forst single, a double-A side along with "So Young". It's probably my favourite song of theirs, after "I Am The Resurrection". Very raw. I love it.

"Paradise City" by Guns & Roses. This song, for me, means summer. It's designed to be played at maximum volume to a crowd of thousands, preferably on a beach, in 30°+ heat. So not so much shaping my spring, as announcing my summer, with a bang.

"15 Stepz" by Amplive (ok, not really by Amplive, but by Radiohead, remixed by Amplive). This is great, in my opinion. If you're one of those people who thinks Radiohead are "too god" to be remixed, or that remixing their stuff is like, sacrilege, screw you. Besides, Radiohead thought this remix was good enough that they allowed it to be released without suing anyone. Plus, the video is pretty good, if a trifle weird.

"Reptilia" by The Strokes. The Strokes Best Song Ever. Definitely one for listening to while driving at great speed (or, alternatively, depending on your point of view, to be avoided at all costs while driving). Awesome.

My alternative "seven songs" list consists entirely of Tenacious D, picked at random. I think I bogged the one most people would want to read (apart from Andy). :-)

Gorillaz - D-Sides

Gorillaz D-Sides CoverJust a quick review this one. When I originally saw that the 'Rillaz were releasing another "b-sides" collection to accompany their Demon Days album (similar to 2002's G-Sides, released after their eponymous first album), I decided that I was going to buy it. Then I forgot to.

Then the other day, I was browsing through the iTunes Store on my iPod Touch (which was nice), and I saw it, and bought it immediately (actually my first ever iTunes Store purchase, believe it or not).

It's a much better effort that G-Sides, which contined only a couple of new tracks alongside a few remixes and additional tracks. D-Sides features, in the main, a pile of brand-new tracks and original versions that went on to become tracks on Demon Days, alongside some remixes, the Hot Chip remix of Kids With Guns being a standout track among them.

I'm not going to do a track-by-track analysis, I'll just say that I've been listening to it in the car and in work for the past couple or three days, and it's becoming a favourite. A bit like the way Demon Days took a few listens to warm up to, before becoming one of my all-time favourite albums, this is taking several listens to get into its' groove. My favourite track? It's gotta be Bill Murray.

Radiohe_ad Remi_xed

amplive-rainydayz.jpgIn case you didn't know, some dude called Amplive remixed some tracks from Radioheads' In Rainbows and was all set to release them onto the Intertubes in December, but then received the inevitable "cease-and-desist" from the big R's lawyers, and pulled the whole thing.

Fortunately, they met up with each other since, and decided all that messing about with lawyers and crap was a load of old arse, and as of today the album Rainydayz Remixez is available as a free download, featuring contribitions from Too $hort, MC Zumbi of Zion I, Chali2na of Jurassic 5, Codany Holiday, and Del The Funky Homosapien (two of which I've actually heard of). Some of the tracks are alright. Some of them are really good. I suggest you have a listen.

This blog looks totally, utterly pants in Internet Explorer. So stop making excuses and download Firefox (or even Opera or Safari) right now (unless you already have).
